Bookshelf Envy

"You can't get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me."
C.S. Lewis

I love to read. Books are the most efficient consumption method for information. Beyond the tools the internet brings us, a book gives a finished product that blogs and websites can’t provide. I find the finality that comes after reading the last page comforting. Plus, I love opening a book for the first time and being immediately engulfed in the “new book smell." Mmmm.  As the books began to pile up I knew it was time to invest in a bookshelf. I had ideas in mind but that usually ends very badly. (I.E. buy an item…rummage through my toolbox…demolish the item…cry…ask my dad to fix it.) Leaving all preconceived ideas at the door I began my search at Scott’s antique market. Who knew it would be such a debacle?  After months of searching for the perfect shelf I postponed my exploration. (FYI: I have an issue purchasing anything I don’t love) For now my books will be stored away in boxes as I gather ideas from the incredible designs below to design my perfect library…until then I shall sit and sulk in bookshelf envy.

 Last but not least...my favorite!!

Exhibition 101

“The brick walls are there for a reason. They are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something.”
 Randy Pausch- The Last Lecture

The Last Lecture is one of those books I can’t keep on the shelf because I want everyone to read it. I am constantly lending it to the next person. The quote above sums up my last few weeks...it has been quite a ride. In class we are designing exhibitions pertaining to global change. My topic, urbanization, is a fairly new concern and honestly, scares the beejeezus out of me. Such is life...design most go on. The exhibit will focus on the following topics: population, solutions, biomimicry and the Atlanta belt line. Urbanization is a universal concern so it was important to break it down into key issues. The previous posts were part of my research phase. This is where I immersed myself in theses, lectures, articles, books and websites. Below is the process inside my head on paper...WARNING: if you haven't read/watched the last few post this will be a foreign mess! This will be my first attempt at exhibition work. I am excited and overwhelmed with the possibilities. Who knows one day you might be planning a trip to visit my exhibition…hope to see you there...

Best’s xoxo

If you could open a door to anywhere, where would you go?

“The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live.”
Flora Whittemore

We walk though doors every day. They are as common as a foot step and usually overlooked. I can count on one hand the number of times I have walked through a door that has made me pause in the moment. One incident that stands out considerably is when I was in Los Angeles with my brother. As we were walking down the street to our next destination I spotted a door made of hand carved wood. At that point I realized the experience commences at the entry. I was so enamored I convinced myself I wouldn't leave the city without it. Unfortunately, I left L.A with only a picture. Mark my words...I will one day return to Georgia with that flawless door.

THE door. perfect.

love.

door made of beer bottles. creative.

i'll have these one day. obsessed.

what's on the other side?

this is where my fairytale starts.

Always open the door...in the words of Katy Perry..."Maybe you're reason why all the doors are closed so you could open one that leads you to the perfect road"

Heres to finding the perfect road.

Global Change: Where do I fit in?

"You can adopt the attitude there is nothing you can do or you can see the challenge as your call to action."
Catherine Pulsifer

Let's be real, what we are doing is not working... sustainability is the future.

My weak spot

Everyone has their weak spot. The one thing that, despite your best efforts, will always bring you to your knees, regardless of how strong you are otherwise." - Sarah Dessen

There is something you should know...I love Jcrew. It is my weak spot. So of course I am obsessed with Spring 2011's color palette. Here is the sneak peak...prepare to ooooooo and aaaaaaa!!!

jcrew lookbook- 2011

Where does your mind take you? I see myself walking to the nearest cafe, sitting outside sipping a mimosa with my roommate. The sun is shining bright and I am wearing a super sized smile on my face (alongside one of the five outfits above). It makes me feel good. That is the point right? Isn’t it funny how colors effect our mood and point of view?

Once I recovered from the initial shock of instant obsession with the color palette I rummaged for spaces/places that gave me the same response. Lets be real...the thought of walking into the white kitchen below wearing the white outfit above makes want to little girl scream. Sadly, we probably wont see this palette routinely in our world till later this year. Design follows fashion which can only mean one thing...the future is bright!
